Play Areas
When you're creating play areas be a little creative and if you have the space use climbing frames, logs to climb on, stepping stones and anything that lets kids use their imagination.
If you give children the choice of anything manufactured or 'a tree' they'll pick the tree every time.
Make use of pea gravel instead of sand which is easier to keep clean, doesn't attract every cat in the neighbourhood and unlike sand is less likely to get in your eyes, down your socks and every other place it's not supposed to be.
Soft gravel will also give a softer landing when falling on as it doesn't compact like sand.
There are an abundance of ready made units if your budget allows but needn't cost the earth. Ask your timber or shed merchant to make something to your own design!
For something a bit different you can set up a play house on stilts with a verandah outside the door for safety. Given the choice your kids would rather climb a rope ladder, walk a plank or across a rope bridge to their play area than 'just' the norm.
If you have an existing play house or shed, put some bails of straw or spread it around inside, the children will make up their own games and it's easier to clean off them than 'mud'.
The simplest of things will keep your kids amused for hours and needn't cost a lot of money.
