Pergolas and their uses in landscaping
Pergolas...to build or not to build, that is the question!
No it's not a line from Shakespeare, but I'm sure he must have had one in his garden under which he wrote;
"And it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man".
Maybe, or maybe not but I'm sure it was made of Oak if he did have one.
You've a multitude of choices in pergola design and what yours will be made of, which doesn't need to be wood, as many are made of weather proof cables that are stretched over any type of opening, saving on endless maintenance over the years.
If it's going to be timber then it has to be right for the job and treated accordingly so that it withstands all winds and weather for at least 10 years without any appreciable wear.
There are a good number of standard sizes that are ready to take away from good retailers at garden centres or suppliers of garden timber products.
A quick search will turn up experienced installers who are able to design, build and erect a good quality frame for you if you don't know how to build yourself.
Another alternative is to use cables over existing openings which doesn't need any expertise other than drilling holes to fix eyelets into.
This type is becoming more frequently used in landscaping and can be adapted to fit a regular open space or even a corner position.
It does away with having to erect heavy timber especially if you are trying to do it on your own, the cables provide a light and easy to build option even when space is tight.
The type will depend on the setting your adapting it to, such as erecting pergolas over patios or just to provide a shady spot to grow any style of climber onto.
