Decking

Decking can be one of the simplest structures to put together IF you do it correctly. If you've come to the site looking for tips or are in any way unsure about a project like this you might consider hiring professional installers

Building your own does require a fair knowledge of construction if;

  • It's raised above ground level.
  • Incorporates a balustrade.
  • Has steps up to..or down from.
  • Is joined to a solid structure.
  • Requires wheelchair accesible construction.

You can construct a deck in your garden if you have good diy abilities and you stick to some basic rules, everything should go according to plan, but plan you must.

The work itself is a simple procedure which shouldn't give you too much trouble, however, the framework that isn't seen, is more important than any part of the whole structure in its entirity.

Elevated types such as from a first floor bedroom aren't really any different from the basic form except that you've taken the whole thing 'up in the air' so to speak.

Safety will be of prime importance and the balustrading able to take immense continous pressure and the structure itself strong enough to hold any number of people walking across it at any one time.

When you think of the consequences of not doing your homework before building, you'll understand why safety MUST come before aesthetics. When you build your structure close to ground level it still has to withstand a fair amount of pressure that must be incorporated into your calculations.

My advice is not to look for the cheapest option but keep the budget realistic for the project in hand and bear in mind that whatever you build, decking or patio, it should last for a minimum of 30 years when maintained.
