Concrete

There are many concrete mixes within construction, however as a basic rule of thumb use this mix when laying bases for

patios, foundations for walls, paths and hardstand areas etc.

The mix needed will consist of;

  1. 1 part cement.
  2. 3 parts sharp sand.
  3. 6 parts chippings.

The amount of water added will be self evident but add cautiously as the mix can become sloppy, fairly quick.

The quantity guide is measure length x width x depth = volume.
Multiply this figure by 2 to give you the weight of material.

Example 1
A trench 6 metres x 300mm x 100mm = .18 (x 2 = .36 tonnes).

Example 2
A patio 5 metres x 4 metres x 150mm = 3 (x 2 = 6 tonnes).

Each figure is divided into 1 part cement, 3 parts sharp sand and 6 parts chippings being a 1:3:6 mix.

If in any doubt always give your measurements to your builders merchant and have them calculate these quantities for you.

Anything more than a bucket-full is hard to mix by hand so invest in a mixer!

Mixed correctly, it will give you an excellent concrete base for stonework and brickwork.
