Book Reviews

Book reviews is where I need your help with the review page and appreciate your feedback. From here we can "grow" the list of gardening books that cover landscape and garden design, if you think they're worthy of a read!.

If you're an author or want to pen a few lines maybe on garden design, organic gardening or just 'have your say' then send it on and let's put it on the net, I'm sure there are a good number of people out there who 'want to have their say'!

Let book review help you along the way!

RECOMMENDED

The Ultimate Garden Designer by Tim Newbury

About the author
Tim Newbury has won three Gold Medals at the Chelsea Flower Show and has professional qualifications in architecture, landscape architecture and landscape design and runs his own garden design consultancy.

Picked this one up in Bath the other week and wouldn't put it down for hours. What was intended to be a book review shopping trip, turned into a reading session stopping at EVERY coffee shop in Bath.
I think I could have 'piddled for England' that day, ;-) although I'm Welsh and proud of it!

Luckily I'd already bought Katherine a handbag albeit 10 times what the book cost, a small price to pay!!!

If you're going to have books to refer to this HAS to be in the collection, it's full of varied designs and ideas that you can adapt to ANY garden.

Plenty for both hard and soft landscaping enthusiasts.

A real pleasure to review time and time again.

The Essential Garden Design Workbook by Rosemary Alexander

About the author
Founder and Principal of The English Gardening School at the Chelsea Physic Garden, London. Rosemary Alexander writes and lectures worldwide on garden design. She has worked on a wide range of gardens throughout the world. For eleven years she was tenant of the National Trust property, Stoneacre in Kent, where she created a romantic, old world garden. She now lives in Hampshire where she has made a new garden.

This is a 'sit down and read' book that actually shows you what to expect from your garden designs and how to achieve it.

It's an extremely practical view from a lot of different angles that walks you through all aspects of planning, experimenting with and eventually realising exactly HOW to achieve what's in your minds eye, from ideas through to application.

Whether you're a design student, keen gardener, experienced garden designer or a novice there's something in this book for everyone.

My view of garden and landscape design is through my constructional knowledge and how to apply this with the soft landscaping a secondary consideration. You can't help but succeed with books like this to refer to.

Lots of sketches and pictures which cover EVERYTHING.

Driveways, Paths and Patios by Tony McCormack

About the author
Prior to being disabled, Tony McCormack was the senior contracts manager and proprietor of A. J. McCormack & Son , a contracting company specialising in all forms of paving and groundwork. He is a professional paving contractor and was the hard-landscaping expert for the Expertgardener website hosted by Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock to capitalise on the Ground Force television series. He acts as a paving consultant and advisor to corporate and private clients, and is the webmaster of Pavingexpert.com, the world's most popular and hard-landscaping website.

It'll show you exactly what to do!

This guide is a straight from the horses mouth (no offence Tony!) of HOW TO do anything and everything with driveways, paths and patios. There is an abundance of info on paving and the very best methods of preparing and installing all of the above.

Tony has been there, done it and nobody but nobody can tell you any more than he does in this 'bible' of practical know how.

This is THE book that I refer to when I need a reference for my own work.

When I say that this is a no nonsense guide,I mean it. There quite simply isn't anything like it, anywhere. This book goes everywhere that I do and my customers and clients are more than impressed when I refer to various sections in the book for my own work.

One book review that is repeated over and over.

If you have a book that you have found interesting or would recommend adding to the book reviews page, it can even be your own work or words please email me at book reviews.

Please stay tuned to the book reviews page for continuation. If you would like to know what's happening at any time you can always get a copy of "knee deep" sent to you.

It's a regular newsletter with all the news as it happens, together with a few stories of my own experiences!
