Arches

Arches take many forms and appeal to most people, providing openings to areas of the garden hidden or accentuated giving a natural shape to plants and foliage.

The more definite types would be in arbours, trellises or perhaps even built of stone. The skills of a craftsman is usually needed to create features in stone or brick and should not be attempted by the faint hearted.

When you're building in brickwork or stonework it's merely an opening in a wall without any appreciable loss in strength. This will provide the support to continue up with your wall as the opening should not drop unless the walls either side are “pulled apart”.

Many types are possible to create including semi-circle, three centred and gothic, from a wooden template.

There are little or no restrictions when constructing, whatever material you’re using.

Trellises can be formed quite easily to create a series of arches along a long wall and with the use of climbers give a dramatic effect to any garden design.

Landscaping designs can be altered considerably to reduce or open a view depending on how and where it is included, a bit like looking into or out of a tunnel.
